5 Ways Yoga - Find Self-Acceptance

When I began practicing yoga, my mind was in control of my body. I was incredibly judgmental of myself. I expected mental and physical perfection from myself at all times. The voice inside my head was constantly critical and terribly pessimistic. I have learned a lot about myself through my practice. The most important lesson is that I needed to love and accept myself for who I am. Not who I wanted or expected myself to be.

Yoga has helped me get to know and love myself—my true self—and it can do the same for you. Getting to know your true self, not the person you want to be or think you should be, is an important factor in finding self-acceptance. Once you know yourself, you can begin to love yourself. Yoga creates a space for you to slow down and really focus on you. When you slow down and focus on your breath and feeling your body, it really becomes difficult to ignore all the stored up negative emotions that you are holding onto.

Yoga allows you to become more aware of your critical thoughts. Once you are aware of these thoughts, you can learn to observe them rather than absorb them. By observing and letting go of negative self-talk, you will begin to see that the voice in your head isn’t logical and that the thoughts you have are often not based in reality.
