The IT band is a fibrous tissue that lies over the muscles from the hip to the outside of the knee, says Wendy Winn, PT, OCS, of New York Custom Physical Therapy in New York City. Given its huge span over important muscles, it's a crucial part of the running motion—and a potential source of injury. If leg strength and stability are lacking, other parts of the body are forced to pick up the slack and absorb the shock from each running strike.
