Experts have quite a different view from your high-school sport teachers. Anna Renderer, performance trainer and external fitness expert for Gatorade Sports Science Institute, says that full sit ups are “way outdated.”

The Chief Science Officer of American Council on Exercise (ACE), Cedric Bryant, mentions that crunches are much more effective and are better than traditional sit-ups. According to him, “The rectus abdominis muscle has a short range of motion, so all that extra movement in a sit-up doesn’t engage it any further. Crunches focus contraction where it is most maximized.”
